The Forest Art Gallery at Starways was originally conceived and built as a cottage/study by Eliot Short who had returned after finishing his studies at Wynstones Waldorf School in Gloucestershire. The style of architecture of the quaint thatched building that greets visitors to Starways has influenced all buildings subsequently erected at Starways. All buildings have been built using relevant alternative, low-impact technology.
The building was completed and added to by a team of Starways artists including: Mik and Sal Haigh, Luyanda Mafika, Sithobile Mona, Gwyneth Lloyd and Anton van der Merwe.
After completing it in 1999, a drumming dinner dedication was held and the following words were written on a piece of hand-made paper:

This little fairy-tale building, also known as "Gate Cottage", has served as residence, library, art and craft studio and framing workshop for various artists and currently has an exhibition of watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings by resident artist
